Once you are done with the Prologue, you will see the opening credits of GTA V roll. Hit ESC, go to Online, and select Go to Online mode.

I don't know if you're having the same issue as I did but it would tell me I need to do the tutorial to get online even though I've already done it multiple times I fixed it by loading into the Yankton tutorial job then load a saved file and it lets me back online
